The Pottawattamie County Freedom Rock was a project of the Oakland Friday Coffee Ladies with support from many individuals and groups. Donations are still being accepted to defray the current and future expenses. Those can be sent to the Freedom Rock Fund, 39503 Honeysuckle Rd, Oakland, IA 51560-4207.

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum’s July Family Night on Friday, July 7, is all about first responders and veterans. All Iowa Reads Book Discussion

6:30 to 8PM | Council Bluffs Public Library
Bottomland by Michelle Hoover is the 2017 All Iowa Reads title. Based on a real life story of the author’s grandmother, the book begins in Iowa in the wake of World War I. Bottomland follows the Hess family in the years after World War I as they attempt to rid themselves of the Anti-German sentiment that left a stain on their name. But when the youngest two daughters vanish in the middle of the night, the family must piece together what happened while struggling to maintain their life on the unforgiving Iowa plains.

The Iowa Center for the Book’s All Iowa Reads program fosters a sense of unity through reading. Iowans are encouraged to come together in their communities to read and talk about a single book title in the same year. Libraries, book clubs, schools and other local organizations are encouraged to sponsor discussions of the title. Books are available now at the Reference Desk on the second floor of the Council Bluffs Public Library.
