Council Bluffs Hotel/Motel Tax Collections in Fiscal Year 2020

A recent report came out from the Iowa Department of Revenue siting the hotel/motel taxes collected in fiscal years 2018, 2019, and 2020 in Council Bluffs. Unfortunately, we saw a decrease over the years. The drop-off between fiscal years 2019 and 2020 was 3.6 percent or $90,711.70. But the floods of 2019 made that decrease look smaller than it might have been so we compared between fiscal years 2018 and 2020. That was a decline of 12.6 percent or $348,670.60.

The report also compares CB’s collections to other communities in Iowa. Burlington, Cedar Falls, Dubuque, and Iowa City experienced less dramatic decreases for one or both comparisons. In fact, Cedar Falls and Dubuque saw a slight increase between fiscal years 2019 and 2020. However, communities like Ames and Waterloo realized more significant drops than Council Bluffs. They saw a decline of 26 percent or more than double what CB saw overall.

The CBCVB is dedicated to marketing and promoting Council Bluffs as a destination for visitors to enjoy the city’s hotels, restaurants, attractions, venues, and events. Visitors serve as new customers for local businesses and new taxpayers for local government benefiting all residents. We currently have several marketing initiatives in place to help bring business to our hotels to boost the hotel/motel tax collections.
