It’s Time to Donate Your Shoes!

This blog contains information about a project that is no longer active. Please visit The 712 Initiative's website for more information on their upcoming events and programming.

It’s time for spring cleaning, which means digging the old shoes out from the back of your closet! To help divert thousands of shoes from our local landfill, The 712 Initiative is hosting their annual shoe drive! Drop your shoes off at one of several drop sites between April 1 through May 31.

Did you know that it takes about 1,000 years for shoes to decompose and that shoe and clothing waste makes up 65.7% of the content in landfills? Every shoe donated in this drive is reused in some way (reused, recycled, repurposed). In addition, The 712 Initiative receives a financial donation for all the shoes collected. You are not only saving the planet, but you are supporting a local nonprofit!

All donated shoes will be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in Haiti, Honduras, and other Central America and African countries. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti earned enough to send her son to law school.

Visit The 712 Initiatives website for a complete list of drop sites.
