On Saturday, September 21, grab your best girlfriends or female family members for a morning out at The Gathering Room where Kung Fu Damsels will host a Self-Defense Team Warrior Workshop at 10 a.m.
Instead of hitting a gym class with the girls or grabbing brunch — you can still grab brunch after of course — spend the morning learning how to protect yourself and getting a workout in at the same time with Kung Fu Damsels.
Kung Fu Damsels consists of Angie and Jim Sutton. As “independent damsel directors,” the Suttons specialize in women’s self-defense.
“This isn’t an addition or an add on — it is our mission,” the Suttons said.
Their classes are designed for women between the ages of 13 and 90. The Suttons hope to reach women who are concerned about their ability to protect themselves and their loved ones if needed.
“[We work with women> who might be tired of living in fear; feeling vulnerable in their day to day lives,” the Suttons said.
Attendees to the September 21 class can expect to walk away feeling educated, equipped, and empowered to protect themselves.
The Suttons’ focus on women’s self-defense allows them to teach styles made for lighter, more agile fighters rather than strength-based. They specifically use a style developed over 400 years ago by women. The style avoids battles of strength (where many women may face a disadvantage) and instead emphasizes using the body’s natural anatomy and physiology against an attacker.
“We are passionate about what we do,” the Suttons said. “We have been conducting similar workshops in this area for several years.”
Those wishing to continue training after the one-time class can sign up for an advanced six-week course or take on full-time traditional combat arts with the Suttons.
The hour and a half class at The Gathering Room is $20 per person. Mother and daughter groups will receive $10 off of their second ticket. Learn more about the class on our calendar page.
