A familiar name in Council Bluffs’ hospitality and business community is being recognized for his lasting impact. Matt Johnson, owner and operator of Barley’s and Railway Inn and a member of the Unleash Council Bluffs Board of Directors, has been named a 2026 Mercy Heritage Award recipient.
Now in its 42nd year, the Mercy Heritage Awards celebrate individuals whose leadership and service have made a transformational impact across Southwest Iowa. Honorees are recognized for their contributions in areas including business, education, health and human services, and the arts—reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening the community through both professional work and volunteerism.
For Johnson, that impact is deeply rooted in both his businesses and his community involvement. Since opening Barley’s on the Historic 100 Block in 2001, he has helped shape a space that goes beyond dining—creating a welcoming environment known for quality, consistency, and connection. Today, that commitment continues through both Barley’s and Railway Inn, each offering distinct experiences while sharing the same focus on hospitality and community.
Beyond the doors of his businesses, Johnson and his family have remained actively engaged in the community, supporting charitable efforts and local initiatives. His leadership extends to his role on the Unleash Council Bluffs Board of Directors, where his perspective as a local business owner continues to help guide efforts to promote the community as a destination.
“I’m truly humbled to receive an award that has historically honored many individuals I hold in high regard,” said Johnson. “Recognition has never been my purpose, but if our community engagement and support of local initiatives can inspire others to get involved, that’s the greatest reward of all.”
Johnson’s recognition also reflects the broader strength of Council Bluffs’ business and hospitality community.
“Matt has been a long-time member of the Unleash Council Bluffs Board of Directors, serving since July 2017,” said Mark Eckman, Executive Director of Unleash Council Bluffs. “He has offered keen insight into the opportunities and challenges facing the restaurant industry at the local, state, and national levels. In addition to his work with Unleash Council Bluffs, Matt has shared his expertise as a member of the Iowa Tourism Advisory Group, a select group of travel professionals appointed by the Iowa Tourism Office. I congratulate him on being recognized with the 2026 Mercy Heritage Award for all that he has done.”
Johnson will be honored at the Mercy Heritage Awards on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center. The event brings together community members, leaders, and supporters to celebrate individuals who continue to make Southwest Iowa a stronger, more vibrant place.
Congratulations to Matt on this well-deserved recognition—and thank you for the continued role he plays in shaping the Council Bluffs experience for both residents and visitors.
