Pottawattamie County Purchases Mt. Crescent Ski Area

Announced in early January, Pottawattamie County is now the new owner of Mt. Crescent Ski Area in Honey Creek, Iowa. Mt. Crescent first opened in 1962 and has been in operation for 60 years. The facility offers snowboarding, skiing, and tubing in the unique and beautiful Loess Hills adjacent to Hitchcock Nature Center.

The County obtained ownership with the help of the Iowa West Foundation and the owners of Mt. Crescent, Korby, and Samantha Fleischer. The purchase was finalized on December 30, 2021, and was made possible by an Iowa West grant and American Rescue Plan Act funds, according to Pottawattamie County Supervisor Justin Schultz.

The ski area will continue to be managed by the Fleischers through the remainder of the 2022 season. Once management has been transitioned, the County plans to explore options for further recreational development.

The pandemic has reminded us how crucial outdoor recreation spaces and opportunities are for residents and visitors alike. This purchase will allow the County to continue to support conservation and recreation in Pottawattamie County for years to come! This is a huge win for the County, and we are excited to see what’s next for the beloved ski area.
