    Map & Compass Foundations

    Join presenter Laura Friesell for a unique program, and learn how to navigate in the great outdoors without Google Maps! Students will learn basic principles of map and compass navigation during Tuesday evening's classroom session. Topics will include how to read, interpret, and navigate a topographic map, how to identify parts of a compass, and how to use a compass in conjunction with a topographic map.

    Cost for this program is $15 per student and includes all program materials and admission to the park. Pre-registration is required by Friday, August 16 as space is limited.

    August Hitch Hike

    Join us for the fourth hike in the 2019 Hitch Hike series.

    Meet up with the group at the Old Lincoln Highway Deck at the Hitchcock Nature Center Campground to begin this walk down the Hohneke Trail to Oak Avenue and the Bunker Hill Loop. Explore the northern section of the park and view a remnant of the original Old Lincoln Highway.

    Taco Ride

    5:00 to 11:00PM | Wabash Trace Nature Trail
    Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park, Council Bluffs,
    The Taco Ride takes place every Thursday evening on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mineola, Iowa and back. The scenic ride is about 20 miles through the Loess Hills and ends with dinner at Tobey Jack's Mineola Steakhouse.

    The weekly rides take place from when the trail is dry enough in the spring (usually in April or May) until late in the fall (usually until Halloween). Most riders start at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park where parking is available.

    Slightly more than halfway between the trailhead and Tobey Jack's, many riders will stop at a picnic area, nicknamed Margaritaville, for a quick break and to join in a conversation with fellow bikers or to partake in refreshments they brought with them.

    Hitchcock Nature Center Insect Club

    Everyone is welcome to join in the fun with the Hitchcock Nature Center Insect Club. The meeting will feature a presentation on insects that are commonly spotted in the pollinator gardens at Fontenelle Forrest by club member Loren Padleford.

    This organization combines learning with volunteering as insect enthusiasts gather together in Iowa's Loess Hills. Meeting the fourth Thursday of the month, from May through September, this club provides a new opportunity for those with an interest in insects. Each meeting will include discussing club business, and a presentation or educational program.

    All club meetings are open to the public. Attendees under 16 must be chaperoned by an adult during meetings and other events.

    Car, Truck, and Bike Show

    One Arena Way, Council Bluffs,
    Join us for this vehicle show! There will be 45 show classes and we'll be giving out 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies! There will also be a raffle and silent auction.

    The event is free and open to the public. It will happen rain or shine in Lot C of the Mid-America Center.

    Labor Day Festival

    Bass Pro Shops

    Celebrate Labor Day weekend at Bass Pro Shops! Join us for activities like photo downloads, duck ponds, a fish ring toss game, a kid's craft (Labor Day sign), and more. There will also be face painting from 1 to 4 p.m. There will be giveaways at some activities.

    The first 100 children to complete in the photo download, ring toss challenge, and bean bag toss activities will receive an adventure tin box. Must complete all three to receive. There will also be seminars throughout the weekend and free food to try!

    Homeschool in the Hills: Geology

    Area homeschool students are invited to join us for another exciting Homeschool in the Hills program.

    What's so great about dirt? Turns out there's quite a bit! Learn more about Iowa's unique and spectacular Loess Hills and the soil that makes them so special. Explore minerals of all shapes and sizes and get your hands dirty in a wonderful way.

    Two sessions of this program are offered. The morning session is from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and the afternoon session is from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

    Backpacking 101

    Join experienced educator Laura Friesell and Pottawattamie County Conservation for a four-part series of classes designed for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts with limited backpacking experience.

    This program will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the following dates:
    Thursday, September 5 - Classroom session at Hitchcock Nature Center
    Thursday, September 12 - Gear demonstration at Backwoods, Omaha
    Thursday, September 19 - Classroom session at Hitchcock Nature Center

    Following the three instruction sessions, program participants will head into the field on Friday, September 27 for a guided overnight to test their skills. We will meet at Hitchcock Nature Center at 5:30 p.m. on Friday night and break camp on Saturday morning at approximately 11 a.m.

    This program is being presented as part of our adult education program, participants must be age 15 and older to participate. Cost is $65 per student and online pre-registration is required.

    Family Camp Out

    First time tent campers are invited to join us for a guided overnight camp out at Hitchcock Nature Center in our picturesque group tent campsite. This program is designed for families with children who have little to no experience with tent camping and are interested in learning more about this great family activity.

    Our naturalists will be on hand to guide you to our special group campsite and help you set up your camp as you discover the world of camping. After a peaceful night in the park, we will be up early for some breakfast and will break camp by 10 a.m. on September 8.

    Cost is $50 per family and includes all camping fees, admission to the park, a tent, dinner, and breakfast. Families are asked to pack appropriate clothing and bring their own bedding. Pre-registration is required for this event as space is limited.

    September Hitch Hike

    This hike is the most challenging hike of the series. Head out to the westernmost section of the park along the famed Westridge Trail to our final destination, a scenic overlook with an astounding view of the Missouri River. All experience levels are welcome but this 2.5-mile hike will include traversing steep terrain.

    Monarch Tagging

    How in the world do you tag a monarch butterfly? Find out during one of our informative tagging sessions held at 9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m.,1:00 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.

    Learn more about monarch butterflies, their unusual lifestyle and life cycle, and miraculous migration to Mexico as we teach you how we catch and handle monarchs for research during a short indoor presentation. Then participants head outdoors on the hunt for monarchs to tag onsite with help of our provided tagging stations.

    Cost for this event is $3 per person with children age 3 and under free; this fee includes your admission to the park and tags to use on butterflies tagged during the event. Online pre-registration is required by Wednesday, September 18 as space is limited. Due to the popularity of this program, early registration is recommended.

    Hitchcock Oak Inventory Project: Training 3

    The sprawling mighty oak tree remains a symbol of the American Midwest but a new, swift, and little understood disease has recently emerged in our area with the potential to eliminate these iconic trees from our landscape.     100 Block Classic Car Show

    Join us for our 6th Annual 100 Block Classic Car Show! We will be giving out trophies and door prizes. A DJ will be on-site and food and drinks will be available. Dash plaques will be given to the first 150 entries.

    The Avoca Main Street Longest Table

    Join friends and neighbors at one "longest" table for a unique dining experience. A chef-hosted five-course meal will be presented sourced from our Avoca Main Street Farmers Market vendors or other nearby producers.

    Chef James Edward Calkins of Milk & Honey Restaurant is designing and executing the menu. McCarthy Trenching, a modern ragtime band, will provide entertainment.

    Happy Hour will begin at the Avoca Legion Hall at 5 p.m. Weather permitting, we will move to dine outside at one" longest" table from 6 to 8 p.m.

    The Taco Ride takes place every Thursday evening on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mineola, Iowa and back. The scenic ride is about 20 miles through the Loess Hills and ends with dinner at Tobey Jack's Mineola Steakhouse.

    The weekly rides take place from when the trail is dry enough in the spring (usually in April or May) until late in the fall (usually until Halloween). Most riders start at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park where parking is available.

    Slightly more than halfway between the trailhead and Tobey Jack's, many riders will stop at a picnic area, nicknamed Margaritaville, for a quick break and to join in a conversation with fellow bikers or to partake in refreshments they brought with them.

    Hitchcock Nature Center Insect Club

    Everyone is welcome to join in the fun with the new Hitchcock Nature Center Insect Club for their last meeting of the 2019 season! The meeting will feature a presentation on insects in the news by club member Dennis Kingery.

    This organization combines learning with volunteering as insect enthusiasts gather together in Iowa's Loess Hills. Meeting the fourth Thursday of the month, from May through September, this club provides a new opportunity for those with an interest in insects. Each meeting will include discussing club business and a presentation or educational program.

    All club meetings are open to the public. Attendees under 16 must be chaperoned by an adult during meetings and other events.

    A Pottawattamie County Almanac: Autumn Splendor

    Join us for the eighth session of the 2019 programming series. Head outdoors and experience autumn in the Loess Hills. Explore photosynthesis and the finer points of cellular respiration, and learn about the way those processes impact the fall color change in our woodlands. Then enjoy an introduction to nature photography in the beautiful fall landscape.

    Modeled after the classic work "A Sand County Almanac" by naturalist and Iowa native Aldo Leopold, this program series aims to follow the natural rhythms and timings of Pottawattamie County's Midwestern setting. Activities will provide students with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the natural world around them and include guided hikes, aquatic studies, guest lectures, sketching, journaling, and more.

    Knee High Naturalists

    Young learners will get a hands-on nature experience during our new programming series, Knee High Naturalists. This new programming series is designed for children ages 2 to 5 accompanied by an adult and is full of outdoor fun. During this program, children with their adults will use their imaginations, play, construct, and create their own worlds using various materials during un-directed, child-led play time.

    Cost is $3 per child; adults are free. Online pre-registration is required.

    Nature Club

    Children age 6 and older are invited to discover the natural world at Hitchcock Nature Center as members of our new Nature Club. Activities will include nature journaling to record observations and discoveries, documenting a native plant and its changes throughout the season, guided hikes along the trails at Hitchcock Nature Center, and more. Club members completing the series will receive a certificate and recognition in our monthly newsletter, The Conservator.

    Cost is $3 per child and includes admission to the park and all program materials. Programs will be held at Hitchcock Nature Center on the second Saturday of the month, May through October.

    Pre-registration is required.
