Many of us have ridden only a segment of the gorgeous Wabash Trace, but Birds & Bees is the 5-day fully-supported trail ride that allows you to pedal the distance to Shenandoah and back.
- Thursday, May 19, cycling options include the Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge and the Taco Ride to Mineola, 10 to 40 miles!
- Friday, May 20, ride Council Bluffs to Malvern, 22 miles
- Saturday, May 21, Malvern to Shenandoah, 22 miles
- Sunday, May 22, Shenandoah to Malvern, 22 miles, with the option to ride to the Missouri State Line (40 more miles)
- Monday, May 23, Malvern to Council Bluffs
For starters, Birds & Bees includes trail and camping fees, baggage transport daily, refreshment stops on the trail, your hot shower with a towel, phone charging, live entertainment, and morning coffee (plus optional breakfasts)--all in camp! The scenic ride is about 20 miles through the Loess Hills and ends with dinner at Tobey Jack's Mineola Steakhouse. The weekly rides take place from when the trail is dry enough in the spring (usually in April or May) until late in the fall (usually until Halloween).
Most riders start at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park where parking is available. Slightly more than halfway between the trailhead and Tobey Jack's, many riders will stop at a picnic area, nicknamed Margaritaville, for a quick break and to join in a conversation with fellow bikers or to partake in refreshments they brought with them.

Because of all these amazing changes taking place, Dustin Clayton will be leading two programs this month where you'll look deeply at the plethora of folklore and myth associated with this busy month as the forest fills up with life, color, and sound. During Merry Month of May: Part 2 you will hike through the Loess Hills and focus on how different the forest and prairie seem from the beginning of the month to the end. You will learn more about two trees that are keystones of the savannah, floodplain, and forest here, The Bur Oak and The Cottonwood. The group will discuss how these species shape the ecology of the land and influence human culture while exploring the idea of these trees as "trees of life," or the World Tree or Axis Mundi.

Ride down the Wabash with the BBC NO DROP ride. 10-15 mph avg speed. Ride as far as you like: Mineola, Silver City, Malvern, or beyond and back. The trail is hard-packed limestone. Recommended tire width is 32 mm or wider. The Wabash is a rail trail with no more than a 2% grade up or down. Some sections are paved. There are intersections with roads that will be crossed. Rest stops along the route including Margaritaville. Registration is recommended. eBikes are welcome.

Please meet on the back patio of the Loess Hills Lodge near the Bluestem Room. This event is weather-permitting. In the event of inclement weather, we will attempt to reschedule. Thank you!
Rules and considerations: Because of the intensity of this work, please do not bring children under 12 years old or dogs. Bring them back another day to blaze the trails you helped repair and maintain!
What to wear and bring:

We'll discuss the long tradition of collecting plants dedicated to the Sun between this time of year and the beginning of the harvest season and how to make some traditional herbal preparations using some of these plants. Learn about how people have for many centuries associated this date with the midway point in the growing season and how this influenced their interactions with the living world. We'll also chat about some traditional folk practices for preserving the strength of the sun present at this time of year and bringing it forward through the rest of the year and into the winter. Join us Tuesday, June 21st at 7:00 p.m. for the second hike of our 2022 Hitch Hike series where we'll take a closer look at some of Hitchcock's best prairie remnants as you are guided along Badger Ridge. Discover purple coneflowers and other early summer wildflowers and get an idea of what the hills may have looked like during the time of Lewis and Clark. Youth entering 7th, 8th, & 9th grades get a chance to put their outdoor skills to use during a paddling adventure and an overnight camping stay at Botna Bend Park. Participants arrive at Arrowhead at 8:00 a.m. for a day building canoeing skills & learning water safety. Our second day will start out at 8:00 a.m. at the Eddington Memorial Park in Avoca (location subject to change) where we will embark on a canoeing adventure down the West Nishnabotna River Water Trail to our overnight camp out location at Botna Bend park. Parents can pick up their campers at 11:00 a.m. at Botna Bend Park the next day (location subject to change).
Where: The camp will be held at Arrowhead Park in Neola, IA and Botna Bend Park in Hancock, IA.
When: 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28th and 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 29th through 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 30th.

The Taco Ride takes place every Thursday evening on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mineola, Iowa, and back. The scenic ride is about 20 miles through the Loess Hills and ends with dinner at Tobey Jack's Mineola Steakhouse. The weekly rides take place from when the trail is dry enough in the spring (usually in April or May) until late in the fall (usually until Halloween).
Most riders start at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park where parking is available. Slightly more than halfway between the trailhead and Tobey Jack's, many riders will stop at a picnic area, nicknamed Margaritaville, for a quick break and to join in a conversation with fellow bikers or to partake in refreshments they brought with them.

Farm Days is held each year at Carstens 1880 Farmstead near Shelby, Iowa the weekend after Labor Day. Arrowhead Obstacle Trail Run is a 5k (3.1 mile) featuring 15 obstacles on the scenic trails of Arrowhead Park near Neola, Iowa. There is also a 1 Mile Kid's Obstacle Trail Run with 10 obstacles! All proceeds benefit the Pottawattamie County Trails Association. The event will be held on Saturday, September 24th, 2022 beginning at 10:00 AM with the 1 Mile Kids Run. This is NOT a "mud run" and there are no mud pits to crawl through. All obstacles in the 1 Mile and 5k Open Wave are optional (except the hills, those are fixed in place). You may choose to run it as a 5k Trail Run, unimpeded by the "fun" of obstacles. Competitive Wave runners must complete all obstacles to be eligible for a top 6 finisher medal.
