Looking for a unique way to spend a summer morning outdoors? Lace up your running shoes or hiking boots and head to Crescent Hill at Hitchcock on July 18 for the Crescent Hill 5K Tow Rope Trot. Hosted by Pottawattamie Conservation, this festive fundraiser combines scenic views, outdoor adventure, and holiday cheer, all while supporting the future of four-season recreation in the Loess Hills.

Run or Hike Through the Loess Hills

Whether you're chasing a personal best or simply looking to enjoy nature at your own pace, the event welcomes both runners and hikers. Participants will travel through the breathtaking Loess Hills, taking in rolling prairies, woodlands, wetlands, and one of Iowa's most unique landscapes.

The 5K trail race begins at the Crescent Hill ski lodge. Those looking for a more leisurely outing can register for the 2-mile Nature Hike along Crescent Ridge Trail.

The event's Christmas in July theme encourages participants to wear holiday hats, jingle bells, and festive attire. Eco-friendly wooden medals, crafted from trees harvested during a prairie restoration project, will be awarded for the best costume and the top three male and female finishers in each age division.

The overall top male and female 5K finishers will also receive a free skiing weekend for two at Crescent Hill.

Family-Friendly Fun

The Nature Hike is a great option for families and anyone looking for a more relaxed outdoor experience. Leashed pets are welcome to join hikers, making it easy to bring your four-legged adventure buddy along.

Support the Future of Crescent Hill

Every registration helps fund the installation of a terrain park tow rope and supports Crescent Hill's long-term vision as a year-round outdoor recreation destination. The master plan includes expanded recreation opportunities and infrastructure improvements while protecting the globally significant Loess Hills, home to some of Iowa's last remaining native prairie.

If you can't attend but would still like to support the project, donations can also be made through the event registration page.

Registration is $40 through July 17 and $45 on race day. Those wishing to purchase an event T-shirt should register before the shirt order deadline.

Packet pickup begins at 7 AM on race day. Participants ages 21 and older can also purchase a $5 drink pass on-site, which includes two drink tickets for beer or hard seltzer. Individual beverages will also be available for purchase by card.
