Stempel Bird Museum

Known as one of the finest collections in the state, the Stempel Bird Museum in Macedonia features a collection of more than 300 mounted birds, including many rare species and some over 100 years old.

The collection comes from Dr. Guido Louis Stempel, a self-made authority in the area of ornithology. He has left his legacy behind for future generations to have the opportunity to see species that are rapidly becoming endangered and or extinct. In 1967 the Stempel family generously donated his collection to the care of the Pottawattamie County Conservation Board to display to the public. In 2001, the collection returned to the city of Macedonia.

Dr. Stempel did much of his bird and insect observing and collecting in Fort Madison and then Macedonia. After twenty-two years of collecting in Iowa, he was widely known as the expert in ornithology and entomology.
