Kinsman Monument

Overview

Located within historic Fairview Cemetery, the Kinsman Monument honors Colonel William H. Kinsman, commander of the 23rd Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and the thousands of Iowa soldiers who served during the Civil War. Kinsman was mortally wounded while leading his troops during the Vicksburg Campaign and became one of Iowa's most recognized Civil War heroes.

The monument is surrounded by four historic Civil War cannons and serves as a lasting tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and service of Iowa veterans. Dedicated in 1902 through the efforts of General Grenville M. Dodge and fellow veterans, the memorial reflects the deep respect they held for Kinsman's leadership and sacrifice. Visitors exploring Fairview Cemetery can discover this important piece of local and national history while reflecting on the individuals who helped shape the nation.
