A Rare Piece of History Arrives at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum

History is coming to life in a powerful way this spring. Union Pacific Railroad Museum is set to display an extraordinary piece of American history—the Louisiana Purchase Proclamation of 1803—as part of its newest exhibit, “The Nation Before the Railroad.”

Opening during Railroad Days on May 9, this limited-time exhibit offers a rare opportunity to see one of the most transformative documents in U.S. history up close. Originally delivered to a newspaper and printed for the public in November 1803, the proclamation formally announced the nation’s acquisition of vast lands west of the Mississippi River, effectively doubling the size of the United States.

A Defining Moment in American History

Issued under Thomas Jefferson, the Louisiana Purchase Proclamation marked a turning point that paved the way for westward expansion, exploration, and ultimately the development of the Transcontinental Railroad. Now, for a limited time, visitors in Council Bluffs can experience this pivotal moment firsthand.

On display May 9 through July 31, the proclamation will be accompanied by other rare artifacts from the museum’s collection, including:

  • An original Jefferson Peace Medal from 1801
  • An 1806 map of North America illustrating the vast reach of the Louisiana Purchase
  • A volume from the 1853 Pacific Railroad Surveys, which helped determine the route of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad

Together, these items tell the story of a growing nation and the foundations that led to the expansion of rail across the continent.

Bringing the Past to Life

The “Nation Before the Railroad” exhibit will feature interpretive displays that connect the Louisiana Purchase to the rise of the railroad, giving visitors a deeper understanding of how early decisions shaped the future of transportation and development in the United States.

“This opportunity has allowed our newest exhibit to take shape and provide the foundation for many more historic documents to be contextualized,” said museum curator Patricia LaBounty.
