Supporting Businesses Impacted by Recent Water Shortage
After multiple challenging weeks navigating a boil order and water restrictions, several community and government organizations are coming together to support Avoca businesses through a special event, "Pour into Avoca." This initiative, organized by Pottawattamie County, the City of Avoca, Avoca Main Street, and the Western Iowa Development Association, aims to draw visitors from across the county to shop, sip, and support Avoca’s restaurants, boutiques, salons, and more.
The recent water shortage and subsequent boil order and water usage restrictions significantly impacted small businesses in Avoca. Many of them faced operational challenges and reduced customer traffic. With the boil order lifted and water restrictions eased, the community is ready to rally together and help these businesses bounce back.
"A variety of businesses in our downtown district were affected to different degrees during the recent boil order, from restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, and taverns to salons and personal care providers,” shared Amber Mohr, Executive Director at Avoca Main Street. “Throughout the disruption, our local businesses worked tirelessly to continue offering as many services as possible. Now, they’re ready and excited to fully welcome customers during the upcoming Pour into Avoca event."
The "Pour into Avoca" event invites all residents of Pottawattamie County to show their support by visiting Avoca and enjoying the unique offerings of its local businesses. Every dollar spent will contribute to the community's recovery and growth, helping to restore vitality and resilience.
“Between the boil order and the level red water conservation restrictions, sales have dropped 75% for three weeks straight,” explained Andrea Radd, owner of Raddberry’s Bakery and Cafe in Avoca. “With the added expenses from bringing in the amount of water needed to keep our doors open during that time, it put us even further in the negative. Being a new business, the impact this is tremendously hard, and it will take months to recover. It will take the support of our surrounding community members to bring us back to where we were before this all started.” The event is an opportunity for the entire county to come together, celebrate local resilience, and make a positive impact on Avoca’s economy.
