Union Pacific Railroad Museum Debuts New Exhibit at Railroad Days

Railroad Days is an annual celebration of all things train and track. Celebrate CB's rich railroad heritage and place in history as historic Mile Zero for Union Pacific Railroad. There will be numerous train-themed activities and locations to visit between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2022.

The Union Pacific Railroad Museum, RailsWest Railroad Museum, Pottawattamie Arts, Culture and Entertainment (PACE), the Historic General Dodge House, and the Historic 100 Block of Council Bluffs are teaming up to offer this annual event. Kids will be excited to ride the trollies to each participating location and to take part in numerous hands-on activities with interactive technology and exhibits that explore the vast world of the railroad!

During the community-wide celebration, the Union Pacific Railroad Museum will be opening its new exhibit "Discovered! Winter Sports Under a Summer Sun: The Railroad and Sun Valley."

Union Pacific developed, owned, and operated America’s first ski destination at Sun Valley, Idaho, from 1935 to 1964 as part of a 20th Century program to increase destination travel on Union Pacific passenger trains. Hoping to draw on the European model, then UP Chairman Averell Harriman hired Count Schaffgotsch, an Austrian nobleman and gifted skier, to act as an expert on the European ski industry and locate an appropriate site for the resort.

Visitors will learn about the iconic resort’s Hollywood connections and the presence of Nazi sympathizers in the iconic ski school operated at Sun Valley! The exhibit will also include Union Pacific-produced promotional films about Sun Valley as well as other objects and memorabilia from Sun Valley from the Union Pacific collection.

Passes for Railroad Days are $10 per group, which includes two adults and unlimited children under 18. An additional adult pass can be purchased for $5. Passes may be purchased in advance online and can be redeemed the day of the event at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, where each person will receive a wristband that allows you unlimited rides on the trolleys and admission to both the RailsWest Railroad Museum and the Historic General Dodge House.
