This summer, Council Bluffs welcomes some of the nation's top adaptive athletes as the 2026 USA Boccia National Championships come to the Iowa West Field House from July 29 through August 2. Supported by the Omaha Sports Commission and Unleash Council Bluffs, the five-day event will bring together more than 80 athletes, along with 100+ coaches, family members, caregivers, officials, and staff, for one of the nation's premier adaptive sporting competitions.
What Is Boccia?
Boccia is a precision ball sport played indoors with soft leather balls by athletes who compete from wheelchairs. Unlike outdoor bocce, boccia is an official Paralympic sport that emphasizes strategy, accuracy, and control over speed or strength.
Designed for athletes with physical disabilities, the sport features six competition classifications based on physical ability. Some athletes throw the ball by hand, while others use a specialized ramp operated with the assistance of a sport assistant. Every match showcases incredible concentration, precision, and tactical decision-making as competitors battle for national championship titles.

Want to Get Involved?
The championships are also looking for local volunteers to help make the event a success. Volunteers are needed for event setup on July 29, as well as throughout the competition from July 30 through August 2. Opportunities include court setup, athlete check-in, timers and scorers, linespersons, greeting guests, staffing the information table, and other event support roles. Training is provided for competition positions, and volunteers can sign up for as much time as their schedule allows.
