Alexander McCall Smith, author of over 100 books, is best known for his internationally acclaimed No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, translated into 46 languages and adapted by HBO and BBC. His recent books include From a Far and Lovely Country and The Great Hippopotamus Hotel (October 2024). Other popular series include the Isabel Dalhousie, 44 Scotland Street, Corduroy Mansions, Professor Dr. von Igelfeld, Paul Stuart, and Detective Varg. McCall Smith also writes short stories, poetry, children's books, and opera librettos. Born in Zimbabwe, he taught law at the University of Edinburgh and has received numerous awards, including a CBE and a knighthood.
