The Taco Ride takes place every Thursday evening on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mineola, Iowa, and back. The scenic ride is about 20 miles through the Loess Hills and ends with dinner at Tobey Jack's Mineola Steakhouse. The weekly rides take place from when the trail is dry enough in the spring (usually in April or May) until late in the fall (usually until Halloween).
Most riders start at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park where parking is available. Slightly more than halfway between the trailhead and Tobey Jack's, many riders will stop at a picnic area, nicknamed Margaritaville, for a quick break and to join in a conversation with fellow bikers or to partake in refreshments they brought with them.
Note: The Taco Ride is a weekly event. It runs every Thursday evening during most of the year, weather permitting. Visit the Taco Ride website, linked below, for event news. For more information about the ride, visit our blog.

Hunt made his remarkable debut back in 2014 with Montevallo, a revealing self-portrait told via a pastiche of sounds native to Hunt’s Georgia hometown: country, hip-hop, and R&B. The collection went triple platinum and logged four No.1 Country Airplay singles, a first for any male in the history of the genre off of a first album. Singles like “Leave the Night On,” “Take Your Time,” “House Party,” and “Break Up in a Small Town,” all platinum-certified in their own right, each also enjoyed true crossover success. All four cracked the Top 30 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100.

The Butterfly Effect by Rachel Mans McKenny is the 2022 All Iowa Reads title. Is there such a thing as an anti-social butterfly? If there were, Greta Oto would know about it–and totally relate. An entomologist, Greta far prefers the company of bugs to humans, and that’s okay, because people don’t seem to like her all that much anyway, with the exception of her twin brother, Danny, though they’ve recently had a falling out. So when she lands a research gig in the rainforest, she leaves it all behind. The Iowa Center for the Book‘s All Iowa Reads program fosters a sense of unity through reading. Iowans are encouraged to come together in their communities to read and talk about a single book title in the same year. Libraries, book clubs, schools and other local organizations are encouraged to sponsor discussions of the title. Books are available at the Reference Desk on the second floor.

We walk the same ground as did those who came before us. What separates us is time-- and vastly different worlds. Though the worlds were different, there was actually a great deal that is the same. This program looks at three very different times in what's now Council Bluffs and examines the challenges the people living here during those periods faced, and the common threads that connect the lives of each group. The program is part of the "It's History That Makes Us Human" series and will be presented by Troy Stolp. The program will be held at the Council Bluffs Public Library, Thursday, July 14, at 7 pm. There is no admission charge and the public is invited. No prior registration is required. This program is supported by a Humanities Project Grant from the Iowa Arts Council and the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs.

Join Dustin Clayton by the banks of the West Nishnabotna river for a discussion centering on the rocks, minerals, and fossils common to western Iowa. We'll discuss the geological events that have shaped the landscape around us and how the rocks and stones present in the rivers, streams, and gravel beds of our region came to be there. We'll also talk about how people have interacted with the mineral world over time and the very long relationship humans have had with flints, cherts, and quartzes. From tools to talismans, we'll examine stones in myth and legend. There will be a walk along the river (weather and river conditions permitting) and a demonstration of stone tool making.

July's Little Tike Hike at Botna Bend Park will take place along Wildflower Glen trail throughout the month. As you enjoy the sights & sounds along the trail you will spot activities posted along your route that are designed to help learners ages 3 to 5 experience nature in a new way. While it is designed for young learners, any age can learn something new and have fun, too! Activities are posted along a .25 to .3 mile stretch of the trail for your enjoyment. This is an "out & back" hike, once you reach the end of the trail you turn around & head back to the trailhead, making a .5 to .6 mile round-trip hike. Of course, if you are having fun you can choose to continue on & enjoy more of the beautiful trails without posted activities. Signs will be posted to help you find your way.
