Carnegie Libraries in Iowa Project

September 9, 2019

Council Bluffs Public Library

Between 1892 and 1919, industrialist Andrew Carnegie and his corporation provided grants for 1,689 public library buildings. In Iowa, 101 were built with money from Carnegie, including the one in Council Bluffs, built in 1905.

The Carnegie Libraries in Iowa Project (CLIP) is working to collect and preserve the documentation related to the building of the Carnegie libraries in Iowa. The information that has been collected has been digitized and made available here.

Shana Stuart has served as Director of CLIP since 2004; she is an adjunct instructor at the University of Iowa with a Ph.D. in Art History and a MLIS. As 2019 marks the centennial of Carnegie's death, she has been invited to give talks across the state to commemorate his contributions to our communities.

This program is free and open to the public.
