This film explores Caldwell’s role as a chief, diplomat, and treaty negotiator during one of the most turbulent periods in Native American history.
Billy Caldwell’s Legacy:
Born to a British Army officer and a Mohawk mother, Caldwell navigated the complex worlds of Indigenous and American politics, advocating for peace while facing the harsh realities of displacement and broken treaties. His negotiations in the 1829 and 1833 treaties led to the cession of millions of acres of land in Illinois, securing temporary protections for his people amidst relentless westward expansion.
