Overview
Located at the Council Bluffs Airport, the Great Plains Wing Museum preserves the history of American military aviation through historic aircraft, artifacts, and educational exhibits. Operated by the Great Plains Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, the museum offers visitors a unique opportunity to experience aviation history up close.
The collection includes more than 1,250 military artifacts and historic aircraft displayed inside the museum's hangar, including a Fairchild PT-19 trainer aircraft and a YO-55 Ercoupe. Exhibits highlight the people, aircraft, and stories that shaped military aviation while honoring the service and sacrifice of veterans.
Since establishing its hangar and museum at the Council Bluffs Airport in 1988, the Great Plains Wing has worked to preserve aviation heritage through restoration, education, and community engagement. One of the museum's most unique offerings is the opportunity to schedule a flight aboard its historic PT-19 trainer aircraft, allowing visitors to experience aviation history from the cockpit.
Museum admission is free, though donations are welcome. Private and personal tours are available by calling (402) 639-4388. PT-19 flight experiences are available for an additional fee and can be scheduled by calling (712) 322-2435.
