Overview
Step back in time at RailsWest History Museum and experience the rich railroad heritage that helped shape Council Bluffs and the American West. Housed in the last remaining passenger railroad depot in Council Bluffs, the museum invites visitors to imagine what it was like to purchase a ticket and wait for the next train to arrive during the golden age of rail travel. Visitors can explore exhibits and artifacts throughout the depot and even step inside historic locomotives and railcars, offering a hands-on experience rarely found today.
The historic Rock Island Depot was originally established in 1869 and replaced by the current brick structure in 1899. From the 1930s through the 1970s, the Rock Island Railroad shared the depot with the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Passenger service ended in 1970, and all railroad operations ceased in 1980. After sitting vacant, the depot was leased to the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County in 1985 and transformed into a museum. In 1995, the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, preserving an important piece of Council Bluffs' transportation history for future generations.
