Riverboat on the Missouri Mural

Overview

Created by artist Luis Valle, Riverboat on the Missouri celebrates the landscapes, waterways, and transportation networks that helped shape Council Bluffs and western Iowa. The mural features a riverboat traveling along the Missouri River, the longest river in North America, with the iconic Loess Hills rising in the background alongside the historic East Omaha Swing Bridge and a vibrant Iowa sunset.

Located in downtown Council Bluffs, the artwork serves as a colorful tribute to the community's connections to the river, railroads, and natural environment. Rich in local symbolism and visual detail, the mural invites visitors to reflect on the people, industries, and landscapes that contributed to the region's growth and identity.

The mural is part of a downtown public art initiative supported by the Iowa West Foundation that helps transform Council Bluffs into a vibrant and walkable cultural destination. The project was made possible through a partnership between Iowa West, Availa Bank, and Western Iowa Mutual Insurance, bringing additional public art and placemaking opportunities to downtown Council Bluffs.
