One of Council Bluffs’ most beloved outdoor spaces is getting an exciting upgrade. Located at 2600 North 8th Street, Big Lake Park spans approximately 191 acres and offers something for every kind of visitor, from peaceful lake views and fishing spots to trails, open green space, and family-friendly recreation.
The park’s existing playground area will soon be transformed into a larger, expanded play space featuring brand-new boat-themed playground equipment inspired by Big Lake Park’s connection to the outdoors and water. The updated playground will create more opportunities for kids and families to enjoy the park while also helping replace the playground that was removed from the north side of the levee following the 2019 flood.
Additional park upgrades will include:
- New resilient rubber safety surfacing for improved accessibility and safer play
- An additional picnic shelter perfect for gatherings and family outings
- A new off-street concrete trail extension connecting the railroad bridge near Joslin Avenue into the park
These improvements are designed to enhance accessibility, improve recreation opportunities, and create an even better experience for visitors of all ages.
Construction is expected to begin this fall, with completion anticipated next spring.
While exploring the park, visitors can also discover one of Council Bluffs’ Art-in-the-Park signs, adding a creative and unique touch to the outdoor experience.
