Grab your tackle box and sunscreen—it’s time to go fishin’! The Council Bluffs Youth Fishing Derby is back and ready to make a splash on Saturday, August 9 at the beautiful Big Lake Park. Whether you’re a seasoned young angler or just getting your feet wet, this annual catch-and-release event promises a reel good time for all.
Open to youth ages 7 to 15, the derby features three age divisions with staggered start times. Each session is limited to 50 participants, so don’t be koi—register early to reserve your spot! Entry is only $5, and registration closes August 2 (or sooner if we fill up!).
How to Win
Catch the longest fish (measured to the nearest ¼ inch), and you could walk away with bragging rights and prizes! The top three catches in each division will win. And in the event of a tie, no need to carp—we’ll settle it the old-fashioned way: Rock-Paper-Scissors.
What to Bring
Anglers must bring their own fishing pole, bait or lures, and a way to keep fish alive for measuring (a bucket or cooler of water will do). We also recommend packing:
-
Snacks
-
Sunscreen
-
Bug spray
-
Lawn chair
-
Lots of enthusiasm!
Parents or guardians must stay on-site during the derby, but remember—no fishing for the kiddos! They’ll need to reel in their own catch (though help with baiting and casting is allowed). All fishing will take place from the shore—no wading or dock fishing permitted.
Big Fun at Big Lake Park
Beyond the derby, Big Lake Park is a top spot for outdoor adventure in Council Bluffs. The 191-acre park boasts:
-
Restocked rainbow trout lakes
-
Two playgrounds
-
Baseball and soccer fields
-
Tennis court
-
Picnic shelter and restrooms
-
Trail access to the scenic Iowa Riverfront Trail
Whether you're casting a line, playing on the swings, or cruising along the trail, Big Lake is a place where families can spend the whole day soaking up summer.
