Council Bluffs just got a little more colorful and creative. The city is now home to its largest mural, Tracks of Time, stretching 560 feet along the FIRST AVE trail-facing wall of Katelman Steel at 2030 2nd Avenue. This collaboration tells the story of steel, from its beginnings to its influence on industry, railroads, and daily life through 21 interconnected train cars, each transformed into a unique work of art.
Collaboration That Builds Community
Led by Richard Harrison and his team at A Midsummer’s Mural, the project brought together 22 artists to create a living timeline of community. Thanks to Iowa West Foundation’s full funding, Tracks of Time adds another stunning piece to Council Bluffs’ growing public art landscape.
Honoring Steel and the People Behind It
“Katelman Steel has been part of Council Bluffs’ industrial story for generations,” said Tony Hovenga, owner of Katelman Steel Fabrication. “We’re proud to host this mural that honors not only the history of steel but also the people, innovation, and artistry that have shaped our community.”
Each of the 21 train cars tells a different story, a mini mural painted by a different artist, all coming together to form one cohesive masterpiece. Harrison describes it best: “Tracks of Time is more than just a mural. It’s a living history told through 22 unique voices. Each artist brought their own perspective to the story of steel, but together we’ve created something larger than any of us could have done alone.”
