FIRST AVE Trail

Overview

Built along a former railroad corridor, the FIRST AVE Trail transforms a piece of Council Bluffs' railroad heritage into one of the city's most distinctive urban outdoor experiences. This 2.5-mile paved multi-use trail stretches from 13th Street to Northbound Frontage Road (west of 35th Street), inviting walkers, runners, cyclists, and other trail users to explore a corridor where recreation, public art, local history, and community spaces come together. Several large-scale public art murals throughout the corridor showcase local creativity, while trail plazas featuring shaded seating, landscaped green spaces, lighting, and bicycle parking create inviting places to relax, connect, and enjoy the journey.

More than just a trail, FIRST AVE is a corridor of discovery. Along the route, visitors can stop at Cochran Park to enjoy a modern playground, pickleball and basketball courts, and open green space before exploring the nearby Broadway/ Legion Park Historic Site, where interpretive displays tell the story of a legendary ballpark that welcomed future Baseball Hall of Famers and hosted games now recognized as official Major League Baseball contests. The Great American Rail-Trail historical marker shares Council Bluffs' role as Mile 0 of the First Transcontinental Railroad, adding another layer of nationally significant history to the experience.

The adventure continues beyond the trail itself. FIRST AVE connects to the Iowa Riverfront Trail through city streets and connecting bike paths, creating a continuous non-vehicular route from central Council Bluffs to the scenic Tom Hanafan River's Edge Park and expanded opportunities to experience the city's growing trail network.
