Overview
Located along the Missouri River, North America's longest river, Tom Hanafan River's Edge Park is one of Council Bluffs' premier destinations for outdoor recreation, riverfront experiences, and community gatherings. Expansive green spaces, scenic overlooks, public art, recreational trails, and panoramic views of the Omaha skyline create an incredible setting for everything from a relaxing afternoon along the river to some of the region's biggest outdoor events.
The park serves as the Iowa gateway to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge, the 3,000-foot-long landmark connecting Council Bluffs and Omaha across the Missouri River. Walkers, runners, and cyclists can cross between two states or continue exploring the Council Bluffs riverfront through connections to the Iowa Riverfront Trail and more than 40 miles of recreational trails throughout the city.
Adventure continues throughout the riverfront. The half-mile Borman Family Treetop Walk rises above the landscape and winds through the tree canopy toward the 138-foot MidAmerican Energy Adventure Tower, where observation decks offer incredible views and climbing, rollgliding, and simulated caving take the experience to new heights. Along the river, the Charles E. Lakin Foundation Pier provides another striking place to slow down and take in the Missouri River and Omaha skyline.
There are plenty of reasons to stay and enjoy the park itself. Belles' Play Garden offers a Missouri River-inspired playground for children of all ages, while the River's Edge Pavilion features gathering space and a rooftop observation deck overlooking the riverfront. The park's five-acre Great Lawn and amphitheater-style seating also provide a memorable setting for concerts, festivals, community celebrations, and other major events.
Recognized as a finalist for the Omaha Metropolitan Area Tourism Award for Best Attraction in Pottawattamie County, Tom Hanafan River's Edge Park brings recreation, adventure, entertainment, and some of the metro area's most memorable views together along the Council Bluffs riverfront.
