Rising 138 feet above the Council Bluffs riverfront, the MidAmerican Energy Adventure Tower brings an extraordinary combination of outdoor adventure and incredible views to Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park. Multiple observation levels take visitors above the trees for expansive views of the Missouri River, surrounding woodlands, Council Bluffs, and the Omaha skyline. For those ready for more adventure, the tower offers experiences unlike almost anything else in the region, from outdoor climbing and aerial rollgliding to simulated cave exploration.
The tower's 50-foot outdoor climbing wall, one of the tallest outdoor climbing structures in the region, offers routes designed for a variety of skill levels. Competition speed-climbing walls meet USA Climbing and Olympic standards, while top-rope routes, lead-climbing challenges, and autobelay systems give beginners and experienced climbers opportunities to test themselves high above the riverfront.
For an even bigger rush, dual 480-foot rollgliders launch approximately 120 feet above the ground, sending two riders racing side-by-side through the air on a roller-coaster-like descent. The tower also features more than 400 feet of interconnected simulated caves, inviting visitors to crawl, squeeze, and explore environments ranging from larger caverns to tighter passages while learning about cave geology along the way.
The adventure starts before visitors even reach the tower. The half-mile Borman Family Treetop Walk connects the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge to the tower through an elevated path winding among the trees. Together, the treetop walk, observation tower, climbing walls, rollgliders, and simulated caves create a riverfront adventure that can shift from peaceful wildlife viewing to high-flying thrills in a matter of minutes.
Access to the tower, observation areas, and surrounding park is free. Climbing, caving, and rollglider experiences require paid admission, with participation requirements varying by activity. Tickets and required waivers can be completed online in advance or on-site through Approach Climbing Gym, the locally owned operator of the tower's adventure experiences.
