Iowa Riverfront Trail

Overview

Follow North America's longest river on the Iowa Riverfront Trail, an easy, paved route that showcases some of Council Bluffs' most scenic riverfront landscapes. With expansive views of the Missouri River, the Omaha skyline in the distance, and plenty of places to stop, relax, or explore, the trail invites walkers, runners, and cyclists of all ages to experience the river at their own pace.

Stretching nearly 8 miles, the highly accessible trail extends from the Western Historic Trails Center to Big Lake Park, with several convenient access points along the way. One of its most popular destinations, Tom Hanafan River's Edge Park, offers spectacular river and skyline views, public art, and access to the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge. Farther north, Narrows River Park provides additional opportunities for outdoor recreation and river access before the trail reaches its northern trailhead at Big Lake Park, where fishing, birdwatching, and peaceful waterfront scenery make for a relaxing beginning or end to your adventure. Visitors can also take advantage of nearby Heartland Bike Share stations to enjoy portions of the trail without bringing their own bicycle.

Looking to explore even more? A short detour onto the nearby FIRST AVE Trail leads to colorful, large-scale murals, local history, and unique neighborhoods before reconnecting with the riverfront experience, adding another layer to your adventure.

Whether you're taking in a spectacular sunset, enjoying a leisurely family ride, logging miles on foot, or simply discovering the beauty of the Missouri River corridor, the Iowa Riverfront Trail offers one of Council Bluffs' most scenic and accessible outdoor experiences.
