Spooky season is creeping in, and with it comes one of Council Bluffs’ most popular fall traditions—the Flashlight Tours at the Historic Squirrel Cage Jail. Hosted by the Historical Society of Pottawattamie County, these tours invite guests to experience history with a chilling twist. Grab your flashlight and your courage, because this is no ordinary walk through a museum.
Built in 1885, the Squirrel Cage Jail is one of only three rotary jails still standing in the United States, and it’s right here in Council Bluffs. While it may no longer house inmates, the stories of its past remain—and some say, so do the spirits. With its eerie architecture, shadowy corners, and decades of history, the jail has become a hot spot for paranormal investigations. Visitors often leave wondering whether the cold chill they felt was just the drafty old building—or something otherworldly brushing past.
The flashlight tours take guests on a guided walk through the jail after dark, offering a unique way to learn about the county’s history. Along the way, you’ll hear about the people who lived and worked within its walls, and you might just encounter an unexpected scare or two. It’s the perfect mix of history and haunt, making it a must-do event for thrill seekers, history buffs, and Halloween enthusiasts alike.
This year, the tours will take place on these dates from 8 PM to 10:30 PM:
Admission is $15 for the public and just $10 for Historical Society members. No reservations are needed—simply show up, grab your flashlight, and prepare for a night to remember. Whether you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of a ghost, or you’re just looking for a unique way to celebrate spooky season, the Squirrel Cage Jail flashlight tours are sure to give you goosebumps. Step inside, if you dare…
