Overview
This 1885 three-story Victorian-Gothic style, brick structure is extremely unique as it is only one of three left in existence. It was one of 18 rotating jail blocks built in the nation to provide maximum security with minimum staff oversight. The design allowed a jailer to stand in one location of the jail and rotate the cell block with a hand crank, bringing each pie-shaped cell to a designated location, where inmates could be served food or allowed to exit or enter.
The jail was in continuous use until 1969. Town legend has it that the jail is haunted. During Halloween season — and sometimes throughout the year, — the jail hosts popular flashlight tours and paranormal investigations.
In 2023, the jail received the designation of National Historic Landmark as one of more than 2,600 properties in the United States with that status. (The Historic General Dodge House also possesses this designation.) Landmarks are nationally significant properties that illustrate or interpret the heritage of the country.
