Experience the power, beauty, and versatility of dance when American Midwest Ballet presents Momentum October 17–18 at the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center in Council Bluffs.
This annual mixed-repertory program brings together three distinctive ballets, each offering its own style, story, and perspective. From an inspiring true story to vibrant Cuban music and an unconventional take on the macabre, Momentum offers an exciting evening of dance.
A Story of Perseverance
One of the featured works is A Light in the Dark, the acclaimed ballet created by Broadway legend Ann Reinking and Chicago choreographer Melissa Thodos.
The production tells the true story of Helen Keller and her teacher, Anne Sullivan, following Sullivan’s determination to reach a young Helen when others had been unable to do so. Through dance, the ballet explores perseverance, the strength of the human spirit, and the powerful impact of a dedicated teacher.
Music and Movement Meet Cuba
Habaneras, the Music of Cuba brings color and energy to the stage. Created by modern dance master Frank Chaves, the work draws inspiration from his Cuban heritage and his father’s love of the island’s musical traditions.
The result is a vibrant portrait filled with movement and emotion, pairing the rich musical heritage of Cuba with Chaves’ distinctive choreography.
A Delightfully Dark Premiere
The evening takes an unexpected turn with Danse Macabre, a new work by American Midwest Ballet Artistic Director Erika Overturff.
While the title might suggest something sinister, this ballet takes a lighter approach to the macabre. Its premise imagines the dead coming together once a year for one unforgettable night. With an eerie skeletal aesthetic and a sense of humor and joy, the work offers a reminder to embrace the moments we have.
