Fireworks and Fun at Lake Manawa State Park
Lake Manawa State Park is a beloved outdoor escape in Council Bluffs—perfect for a day of sunshine, fresh air, and wide-open space. Whether you want to stretch out on the sandy beach, take a boat out on the water, explore nature trails, or host a picnic, it’s one of the most versatile places to enjoy the outdoors in southwest Iowa.
One of the park’s biggest summer highlights is its annual fireworks celebration, a 75-year tradition made possible by community donations. This year’s event took place a few days before the Fourth of July, helping to spark the holiday spirit early and set the tone for a festive weekend.
Before the fireworks, I spent some time exploring the park—starting with its newest addition, the Dream Playground. I’d heard it was the largest ADA-compliant playground in the state, and it did not disappoint. It was bright, expansive, and buzzing with activity. Swings, climbing ropes, slides, and a designated toddler zone gave families plenty to explore. As a bit of a history buff, I loved the Council Bluffs-themed elements built into the design: a golden spike train car, a covered wagon, and miniature versions of the Historic General Dodge House and Historic Squirrel Cage Jail.
Later, I wandered down to the shoreline. The beach was dotted with umbrellas and sunbathers, and a few pickup games of volleyball were underway. Out on the lake, I saw everything from sailboats and jet skis to pontoons cruising by, giving the whole scene that carefree summer energy.
Just outside the north park entrance, I stopped at Doozie’s, a local favorite known for its walk-up ice cream window and rotating selection of hand-scooped flavors. The line stretched down the sidewalk—a sure sign of something good. I went with a Doozie Blender: vanilla ice cream with Oreos and Peanut Butter Cups mixed in. It was the perfect treat to enjoy while I searched for a good fireworks viewing spot.
The crowd for the show was huge—so big that all entrances to the park eventually closed. I ended up parking just east of Doozie’s, outside the north end of the park, and found a perfect view of the fireworks over the treetops. Bonus: I skipped the post-show traffic.
From morning sunshine to fireworks after dark, Lake Manawa is the kind of place where summer memories are made. Whether you’re a local or planning a visit, this state park offers something for everyone—and it’s easy to spend the entire day soaking it all in.
