Hiking, Biking and Bluffs-Top Views
Before exploring the trails at Lewis and Clark Monument, I picked up dinner from a beloved local spot, Christy Creme, and enjoyed it at one of the monument’s picnic tables overlooking the tree-lined bluffs. My go-to order? The crispy chicken sandwich with béarnaise sauce, onion rings, and a black raspberry shake — trust me, you won’t be disappointed. The evening weather was just right: warm and comfortable with a light breeze, even under a cloudy sky.
After eating, I set out to explore the trails. Near the entrance, a trailhead sign marks the start of a paved path that doubles as a walking and biking route, running alongside the road that leads into the park. Many cyclists even take on the hilly road up to the monument itself before venturing into the trails.
Another path to the north of the monument is made for the more adventurous. It winds deeper into the woods and branches off in multiple directions, offering varying levels of challenge. While both trails had fantastic views, I definitely preferred the easier route for a more relaxed experience.
To end the evening, I returned to the monument’s scenic overlook to catch the sunset. From there, you can see Council Bluffs stretched out below, Big Lake Park to the south, the Omaha skyline just across the river, and the Missouri River tracing the state line between Iowa and Nebraska. Set high in the Loess Hills, this is one of the best spots around to watch the sun go down.
Lewis and Clark Monument is a local treasure that combines scenic views, trails, picnicking, and a glimpse into the area’s early history. It’s easy to imagine what the original explorers might have seen from this very spot. The peaceful setting and panoramic views make it a perfect place to pause, reflect, and take it all in.
