Overview
Built in 1869, the Historic General Dodge House was the home of Grenville M. Dodge, a Civil War general, accomplished engineer, and chief engineer of the Union Pacific Railroad. This beautifully preserved 14-room Victorian residence offers a fascinating look into the life of one of the most influential figures in the development of the American West.
Today, visitors can tour the historically authentic home and view original furnishings, artifacts, and architectural details that reflect the lifestyle and achievements of the Dodge family. The house stands as both an architectural treasure and a window into a pivotal era of American history.
Dodge played a key role in the construction of America's first transcontinental railroad, helping transform transportation, commerce, and settlement across the nation. His work with President Abraham Lincoln on the transcontinental railroad helped establish Council Bluffs as the eastern starting point—known today as Mile Zero—of the Union Pacific Railroad. Through guided tours and exhibits, the Historic General Dodge House preserves the legacy of a man whose influence extended far beyond Council Bluffs and helped shape the future of the United States.
