School is almost back in session, which means busier roads, more pedestrians, school buses, and students riding bikes and e-scooters. AAA – The Auto Club Group is reminding everyone to slow down and stay alert as the school-year commute picks up.
Drivers: Slow Down & Stay Alert
School zones and neighborhoods can get hectic quickly. Drivers should:
- Follow posted school zone speed limits
- Put phones away and avoid distractions
- Watch for pedestrians and crossing guards
- Allow extra time so there’s no need to rush
Give School Buses Plenty of Space
Always stop for school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. Stay stopped until students have safely cleared the roadway, and watch for children crossing near the bus.
Watch for E-Bikes & E-Scooters
More students are using e-bikes and e-scooters to get to school, so drivers and riders need to share the road carefully.
AAA recommends that young riders:
- Know local e-bike and e-scooter laws
- Wear a properly fitted helmet
- Follow traffic signs, signals, and speed limits
- Stay especially alert at intersections and crossings
Parents can also check out AAA’s E-Ride Ready campaign and free E-Ride Safety Guide for tips on safe riding.
Start the School Year Safely
A little extra attention can make a big difference. Slow down around schools and bus stops, watch for young pedestrians and riders, and give everyone plenty of room to get where they’re going safely.
