Step into a world of creativity with AMB's upcoming production at the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center
The performing arts scene in our area is vibrant and unique, and one of the reasons Council Bluffs stands out as a hub of creativity. At the heart of this thriving arts community is the American Midwest Ballet (AMB), which continues to bring enchanting performances to life at the beautiful Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center in Council Bluffs. If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a production that showcases both artistic expression and community spirit, now’s your chance! Audition registration is open for AMB’s April 2025 production of Alice in Wonderland, a playful yet poignant adventure that promises to captivate audiences.
Audition Details & Dates
Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 18th, when auditions for the production will take place. Costume fittings will follow on Sunday, January 26th. Both events are mandatory for all selected dancers. Performances of Alice in Wonderland will be staged on April 12 & 13 at the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center and April 26 & 27 at the Orpheum Theater in Omaha, providing two magnificent venues for this dynamic performance.
Who Can Audition
This audition is open to dancers ages 9 and up (determined by the dancer's age on the day of the audition). No need to prepare a dance routine—dance combinations will be taught during the audition, much like a ballet class. This gives dancers the opportunity to show off their abilities without the pressure of memorization.
What to Expect
Auditions are about more than just technique. AMB is looking for dancers who can embody stage presence, follow directions, and bring energy to the stage. They’ll evaluate factors like dance technique, age, height, and the ability to adapt to instruction. While many dancers may audition, not everyone will be cast due to the number of roles available, so don’t be discouraged if it’s not your time to shine—there’s always next year!
What to Wear to the Audition
Proper attire is essential to help the casting team assess your abilities clearly. Here's the dress code:
- Girls: Black leotard, ballet pink tights, and ballet slippers (pointe shoes if applicable). Hair should be in a low bun (pinned flat to the head).
- Boys: White T-shirt, black tights (or non-baggy shorts), and ballet slippers (or socks). There are no special clothing requirements for vocal auditions, but it’s always best to dress neatly and professionally for any audition.
The Importance of Community and Location
The Alice in Wonderland production is set to take place at two stunning venues that contribute greatly to the cultural landscape of our area: the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center and the Orpheum Theater. The Hoff is part of the Pottawattamie Arts, Culture & Entertainment (PACE) initiative, offering a dynamic space for the performing arts and enriching the local community. This year’s production promises to be a captivating blend of whimsy and artistry, set against the backdrop of some of our area's most iconic spaces.
Casting Details
- Understudies: Understudies are dancers who train alongside cast members to learn specific roles. They may be called upon to step into a role if needed, so being cast as an understudy is a great opportunity to enhance your skills.
- Double Casting: Some roles will be double cast, meaning two or more dancers will share the same role during different performances.
Costume Fittings & Fees
After auditions, all cast members must attend their costume fitting on January 26th. The non-refundable costume fee of $65 per student is due by January 20th. Please make sure to wear the appropriate attire for the fitting as outlined in the Information Packet.
How You Can Help
The success of such a large production depends on community support. Parent volunteers are an essential part of making the performance possible. All parents are asked to volunteer for at least two shifts during the production weeks, ensuring a smooth experience for everyone involved.
