The Lewis and Clark Trail in Pottawattamie County

Step into the story of one of America’s most famous expeditions! In 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark traveled the Missouri River as they explored the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. Their journey stretched nearly 4,900 miles across 16 states — and parts of their route passed right through Pottawattamie County.

Today, you can follow in their footsteps with scenic overlooks, riverfront parks, historic markers, and Loess Hills landscapes.

Lewis and Clark never passed directly through the site of today’s Hitchcock Nature Center, but the surrounding Loess Hills played an important role in the landscape they encountered along the Missouri River. Their journals contain some of the earliest written descriptions of these unusual hills.
