Gridshock is a riveting documentary exposing the hidden and disturbing reality behind the sex trafficking demand in Iowa. Vanessa McNeal, a filmmaker and survivor of sexual violence, sets out to explore the often-overlooked reality about why the sex trafficking industry thrives. The truth is that sex trafficking wouldn’t exist without the unquenchable thirst and demand for it. On the quest to learn more, Vanessa discovers who the johns/buyers are and why there is a culture of impunity that hides and protects them. In this riveting and truly disturbing documentary what you think you know about sex trafficking will be challenged. What is hidden will come to light, even in a midwestern state like Iowa. The film features survivors of sex trafficking, local and federal law enforcement, advocates, politicians, and a recovering sex addict. Disclaimer: Due to the content, language and nature of the film, this event is not suitable for anyone under the age of 16 yrs.

The Historical Society of Pottawattamie County's popular "Get Out of Town" program series continues Monday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Council Bluffs Public Library. Stemming from an idea by HSPC member Jon Barnes to focus on areas of the county beyond just Council Bluffs, this installment of the program will look at the history of the area south of the city to the county line. Program co-presenter Troy Stolp notes this is an area rich with history from our very earliest times, including the site of an ossuary of our first known inhabitants and the mustering grounds of the only division in American military history ever based on religion. Presented by Jon Barnes, Troy Stolp, and Richard Warner.

Taco Ride
May 23, 2024
5:00 to 11:00PM
Wabash Trace Nature Trail
Virtual
Council Bluffs, IA
The Taco Ride takes place every Thursday evening on the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, from Council Bluffs, Iowa to Mineola, Iowa, and back. The scenic ride is about 20 miles through the Loess Hills and ends with dinner at Tobey Jack's Mineola Steakhouse. The weekly rides take place from when the trail is dry enough in the spring (usually in April or May) until late in the fall (usually until Halloween).
Most riders start at Iowa West Foundation Trailhead Park where parking is available. Slightly more than halfway between the trailhead and Tobey Jack's, many riders will stop at a picnic area, nicknamed Margaritaville, for a quick break and to join in a conversation with fellow bikers or to partake in refreshments they brought with them.
Note: The Taco Ride is a weekly event. It runs every Thursday evening during most of the year, weather permitting. Visit the Taco Ride website, linked below, for event news. For more information about the ride, visit our blog.
