Join Naturalist and craftsman Dustin Clayton for a three-part exploration of the art of making beautiful, functional musical instruments out of clay. During this series, you will learn a bit of the history surrounding humanity’s relationship with clay, how clay is formed in the earth, and some of the various ways that ceramics have been used to make music for thousands of years. We will also learn a very little bit about musical theory, focusing on the different sorts of scales you can play on a vessel flute. The main focus of our time will be spent creating flutes, ocarinas, and other wind instruments directly from clay. We will learn how to shape and refine our instruments, how to correctly form the mouthpiece so that the flute will be playable, and we will discuss drying and shrinkage as it relates to keeping the flute in tune. The finished pieces will be fired offsite and we will schedule a time for you to pick them up once firing is complete.
