Overview
Broadway/Legion Park Historic Site marks the location of one of the Midwest's most important baseball venues of the early twentieth century. Built in 1910, the ballpark welcomed local, amateur, semi-professional, Negro League, and professional teams while becoming home to the Southwestern Iowa Baseball Tournament, one of the nation's premier amateur baseball tournaments beginning in 1921.
Over nearly five decades, the ballpark hosted 25 future Baseball Hall of Famers, including Satchel Paige, Jackie Robinson, Bob Feller, Dizzy Dean, and Ernie Banks. Between 1946 and 1948, six Negro American League games played here are now officially recognized as Major League Baseball games following MLB's recognition of Negro League statistics and records. Despite its modest size, the park regularly drew thousands of spectators and remains one of Council Bluffs' most remarkable contributions to America's baseball history.
Today, a historical marker commemorates the site's remarkable legacy and Council Bluffs' enduring place in America's baseball story. Located just minutes from Charles Schwab Field Omaha, home of the Men's College World Series, the site highlights the region's long-standing connection to the game.
