Overview
The Haymarket Square District is one of Council Bluffs' most historically significant neighborhoods, featuring the city's largest collection of surviving commercial buildings from the 1860s, 1870s, 1880s, and 1890s. The district emerged following the construction of the city's first courthouse in 1866 and the arrival of multiple railroads, which helped establish the area as a thriving center for commerce, manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution.
Often known as the historic implement district, the neighborhood retains much of its original character thanks to decades of preservation and adaptive reuse. Today, visitors can explore historic architecture while enjoying local restaurants, shops, offices, public art, and a growing creative presence within the district.
Located between several of Council Bluffs' most notable attractions, the Haymarket Square District connects the area's railroad heritage with its future. The district is home to the Haymarket Rabbits sculpture by Deborah Masuoka and sits near the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center, and other downtown destinations.
