A Night of History and Discovery

On February 21st, the Hoff Family Arts & Culture Center will host an exclusive screening of "The Negotiator: Billy Caldwell", a compelling documentary shedding light on the extraordinary life of Billy Caldwell, also known as Sauganash. This screening, presented by PACE, will run from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm and explores Caldwell’s pivotal role as a chief, diplomat, and treaty negotiator during a turbulent period in Native American history. The film was awarded Best Documentary at the 2024 Chatham-Kent International Film Festival.

Who Was Billy Caldwell?

Billy Caldwell was a leader of the Potawatomi people, and his contributions to the 1829 Treaty of Prairie du Chien and the 1833 Treaty of Chicago had a lasting impact on the Midwest. Born in 1780 to a British Army officer and a Mohawk mother, Caldwell straddled multiple cultures. As a chief, he worked tirelessly to negotiate land treaties with the U.S. government while securing his people's survival during forced relocation.

Caldwell’s efforts led to the cession of millions of acres in northwest Illinois, securing some protections for his people in the face of American expansion. However, Caldwell's role is complex and controversial, with his negotiations revealing the difficult balance between survival and resistance.

A Documentary Three Decades in the Making

The film’s producer, Susan L. Kelsey, became fascinated by Caldwell’s story in 1993, when she lived on land he once owned. Kelsey later wrote a book about Caldwell’s life and, in June 2024, released the documentary. The film was co-produced by Michelle Simon and Joe Mitchell from the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation.

After the hour and 45-minute screening, Susan Kelsey will join members of the Pottawattamie County Historical Society for a Q&A session. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and hear from local history experts about Caldwell’s legacy.

A Special Reception

A reception with Native American-inspired hors d'oeuvres will follow the screening and Q&A, offering a chance to reflect on the film and engage in further conversation with fellow attendees.

Why This Story Matters

Billy Caldwell’s legacy is an essential part of Chicago, Illinois, and Midwest history. His negotiations helped shape the region but have largely been forgotten. This documentary aims to reclaim his story, providing valuable insight into Native American diplomacy during the westward expansion and the struggles faced by Indigenous peoples.
