This summer, we’re exploring Council Bluffs through firsthand adventures — one local gem at a time. Follow along as Emily Newby, an intern with the Council Bluffs CVB, shares authentic experiences from trails to treats, and everything in between.
A west-end park packed with energy, playtime perks, and paw-some community fun
Cochran Park, located on the west end of Council Bluffs, has transformed in recent years from a simple neighborhood playground into a vibrant gathering space with something for everyone. Whether you're in the mood to play pickleball, go for a walk, relax with a book, or attend a community event, Cochran Park offers it all.
One of the most unique additions is the high-tech Council Bluffs Public Library checkout kiosk. Stocked with books and DVDs for all ages, it’s available to anyone with a free library card. It’s a convenient resource for nearby residents—and I was excited to spot a few of my own favorite titles inside!
Cochran Park is also becoming known for its pop-up community events, from yoga sessions and library-led activities to silent book clubs and art programs. I recently visited during the Paw-Up Pup Park—a monthly pop-up dog park. Even without a dog, I had a blast watching pups of all sizes splash in the kiddie pool and chase each other around the secure fenced-in area.
The park connects directly to the FIRST AVE Trail, offering a smooth path for walking, biking, and exploring more of Council Bluffs. Informational signs nearby share details about our city’s impressive park and trail network, and I even passed a local mural and pollinator garden just off the trail.
As the sun set, I wrapped up my visit, watching multiple games of pickleball unfold. The new courts were full of activity, and the nearby hard-surface soccer court and modern playground were just as lively. Adults were playing, kids were laughing, and neighbors were coming together on a beautiful summer night. Cochran Park has truly become a hub for community connection and outdoor fun in Council Bluffs.
To cap off the evening, I headed just a short drive away to Primo’s Mexican Restaurant. I indulged in their mouthwatering Chicken Street Tacos, served with flavorful rice and creamy refried beans — the perfect, satisfying finish to an active day at Cochran Park.
