Crossing Boundaries: Discover Bob the Bridge and Its Local Treasures!

Experience a unique blend of nature and urban adventure at the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge! Opened on September 28, 2008, this remarkable 3,000-foot-long and 15-foot-wide bridge connects Council Bluffs to Omaha, Nebraska, making it the first pedestrian bridge to link two states.

Perfect for walkers, runners, and cyclists, the bridge serves as a gateway to an extensive network of 150 miles of trails throughout the metro area. As you traverse this stunning structure, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Missouri River and the vibrant skyline of downtown Omaha. The bridge offers a serene experience, allowing visitors to enjoy the beauty of the river while engaging in outdoor activities. Don’t forget to try your hand at “bobbing”—standing or lying down to strike a pose in two states at once! It’s a fun and memorable way to mark your visit.

Constructed at a cost of $22 million, the bridge floats 60 feet above the river, supported by two impressive towers that soar 210 feet into the sky. These towers are not just a feat of engineering; they also serve as a canvas for seasonal lights that change colors to celebrate local events and initiatives.

In exciting news, the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge was featured on a United States Postal Service postage stamp in 2023, highlighting its significance in connecting Omaha and Council Bluffs. This stamp was part of a collection showcasing four notable bridges designed by art director Ethel Kessler.

On the Iowa side of the bridge, you’ll find Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park, which hosts major annual events, Belles’ Play Garden, and two pieces of art from the Iowa West Public Art Collection. On the Nebraska side, don’t miss OMAR, a friendly troll all the kiddos love!
