How to Spend A Fun-Filled Fall Day In Council Bluffs

9 AM — Coffee & a Downtown Stroll

Kick off your morning with a cup from J's Coffee & Donuts, then take a stroll through the Historic 100 Block or make the 10-minute walk to Bayliss Park for scenic fall views and crisp autumn air. Sip your coffee among colorful leaves, take in the downtown sights, and start your day with a local favorite.

10 AM — Explore Council Bluffs History

Start at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum, where interactive exhibits explore the history of the railroad and its role in shaping the American West. Then step inside the Squirrel Cage Jail for a fascinating look at one of the area's most unusual historic landmarks and its revolving cell design.

Want to add even more history to your day? Visit the Historic General Dodge House and step inside the home of one of Council Bluffs' most prominent historical figures.

12:30 PM — Pumpkin Patch & Orchard Fun

It wouldn't be fall without pumpkins and apples!

Head to Ditmars Orchard & Vineyard for seasonal activities, pumpkins, apples, food, and beautiful orchard views. Or check out Welch’s Pumpkin Patch for a classic fall stop with plenty of pumpkins to choose from.

3 PM — Explore the Outdoors

Walk or bike along the Wabash Trace Nature Trail, explore the trails at Fairmount Park, or take in the views at Vincent Bluff State Preserve. Keep an eye out for changing leaves and local wildlife along the way.

For a quintessential Council Bluffs photo opportunity, head toward the Missouri River and Tom Hanafan River's Edge Park. Then cross the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge and snap a photo right on the Iowa-Nebraska state line.

5 PM — Sip a Local Brew

Stop at Full Fledged Brewing Co., Council Bluffs' first craft brewery, for a pint and a laid-back break before dinner. With locally brewed beers and a welcoming atmosphere, it's an easy addition to your fall itinerary.

6:30 PM — Dinner on the 100 Block

Wrap up the day with dinner in the heart of downtown. Choose a local favorite like Barley’s, Napoli’s, or Glory Days, then stroll the 100 Block and take in the downtown atmosphere.
