Springfest Soars Back to River’s Edge This March

Spring is ready to take flight in Council Bluffs! The City of Council Bluffs is welcoming the season with the third annual Springfest at River’s Edge, happening March 28 and 29 at Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park. This free, family-friendly event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days and offers the perfect excuse to get outside, enjoy fresh air, and celebrate spring along the Missouri River.

One of the weekend’s biggest highlights is the return of Great American Kites, known for their eye-catching, record-breaking kites that fill the sky with color and motion. Add in live music, food trucks, and activities for all ages, and Springfest shapes up to be a can’t-miss kickoff to the season.

Council Bluffs Mayor Jill Shudak encouraged the community to come enjoy the weekend.

“Springfest is a fantastic opportunity for our community to welcome spring, get some fresh air, and enjoy one of our beautiful parks with neighbors, friends, and family.”

A Riverfront Made for Big Moments

Tom Hanafan River’s Edge Park offers wide-open green space, sweeping river views, and plenty of room to relax and explore. Its expansive lawn and clear sightlines make it ideal for large-scale kite displays, while the nearby Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge connects visitors arriving on foot or by bike. This year’s Springfest also takes place alongside the ongoing construction of the MidAmerican Adventure Tower, offering a glimpse of the park’s continued growth as a vibrant community destination.

“This park was designed to bring people together, and Springfest fits that purpose perfectly,” said Council Bluffs Parks and Recreation Director Zach Smith. “Springfest creates a comfortable environment where people can relax, explore the park, and enjoy the event at their own pace.”

Fly Your Own Kite—or Find One On Site

Guests are encouraged to bring their own kite or purchase one on site from Great American Kites. A designated hobbyist flying area gives kids and families a hands-on way to join the fun. Attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs, picnic blankets, water bottles, and snacks, and a water bottle refill station will be available. Leashed, well-behaved dogs are welcome, too. Full music and food truck lineups will be announced closer to the event.

“Events like Springfest are all about making people feel welcome, connected, and proud of their community,” said Ashley Kruse, Communications and Events Manager for the City of Council Bluffs. “We are grateful to Iowa West Foundation for their continued commitment to creating a sense of belonging and investing in experiences that bring people together.”

Getting There Is Easy

Parking will be available in the 700-space garage at 4250 River’s Edge Parkway, along with on-street parking in nearby neighborhoods. Bicycle parking will also be available—and the first 100 people who arrive by bike will receive a free Council Bluffs T-shirt.

Springfest is presented by the City of Council Bluffs and made possible through the generous support of the Iowa West Foundation. Event updates will be shared on the City’s Facebook page @CityofCB.

Whether you’re watching giant kites dance in the sky, enjoying live music by the river, or simply soaking in the springtime atmosphere, Springfest at River’s Edge is the perfect way to welcome the season in Council Bluffs.
